The William Niederberger Jr. Memorial Award was established in 1994, in memory of William and in recognition of his unique abilities and selfless character.

William Niederberger (1965-1994) tragically passed away at the age of 28 as the result of injuries from a traffic accident. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in 1988 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He was a gifted fine arts major and an award-winning runner. He pursued these diverse avocations with commitment and enthusiasm, excelling at both artistic and athletic endeavors. He accepted acclaim with an exceptional humility which belied the intensity of his dedication and the depth of his talents. William worked as a product design engineer in the flashlight division at Ray-o-Vac Company in Madison. He was also president of the Wisconsin Track Club and participated in local, national, and international races.
