Charlotte McEssy
Charlotte H. McEssy (1914-2005) graduated from Fond du Lac High School in 1932. While in high school, she made snow pants out of winter coats for neighborhood children who couldn’t afford them. Charlotte received a bachelor of science degree in upper elementary education (1936) and master of science degree in elementary education and reading from UW Oshkosh. She also attended the University of Oslo, where she studied Special Education involving dyslexia. A former teacher and administrator in the Fond du Lac County rural school system for over 35 years, Charlotte recognized the importance of education in achieving success. After retiring in 1982 from Waupun Middle School, she continued to teach reading to adults with Laubach Literacy.
Charlotte established the Charlotte McEssy Educational Leadership and Policy Scholarship in 1992 and the Charlotte McEssy Reading Education Scholarship in 1991.
