Dorothy Unger

Dorothy Unger received a bachelor’s degree from Wisconsin State College Oshkosh in 1942 and a Masters Degree in Library Science from UW-Madison in 1953. Dorothy taught library science classes at UW Oshkosh and worked at Polk Library. In 1984, she retired as Chair of the Library/Media Department from Oshkosh North High School. Dorothy passed away in 2015. Dorothy and her daughter, Ann Leslie, established the James W. Unger Scholarship in 2007 in memory of Dorothy’s husband and Ann’s father, James.

Dr. James William Unger received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1942 from Wisconsin State College in Stevens Point and served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942 to 1946 in the European Theater. He worked as a radar maintenance technician in Rhineland and Central Europe and attended the American Army Services University in Biarritz, France. He later attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned a Masters Degree in Biology in 1948. James taught at Hope College in Holland, Michigan from 1948 until 1952. He received a PhD from UW-Madison in 1953, and in that year he began his 30-year career as a Professor of Biology at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. During that time, he served as chair of the department for fifteen years. James passed away in 2007.
