Eugene & Nancy Winkler

Eugene F. Winkler received his bachelor of science degree in secondary education from Wisconsin State College in 1959. He went on to earn a master of science degree in education-history from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1967. He taught at Kiel High School (1959-1967) and at Oshkosh West High School (1967-1996), serving as social studies department chair from 1971 to 1996. He was also an ad hoc professor of economics at UW Oshkosh (1990-1996). Eugene was “Professor for a Day” through the Educare program in the UW Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services in 1975 and received the Oranda C. Bangsberg Community Service Award from the Oshkosh Commission on Aging in 2003. Eugene passed away in July 2021.

Nancy E. (Tuschl) Winkler completed college in three years, graduating in 1963, magna cum laude, with a bachelor of science degree in education from Wisconsin State College, Oshkosh. She received her M.S.E. in counselor education from UW Oshkosh in 1990. She was a teacher of physical education and health in the Kiel School District (1963-1966) and a physical education specialist for grades K-6 in the Oshkosh Area School District (1968-1969). She served as human growth and development coordinator for Cooperative Service Agency No. 6 (1985-1998), assisting teachers in curriculum development and providing teacher training in human growth and development topics, gender equity, and health/wellness education. She was also an ad hoc professor at UW-LaCrosse (1994-1998), supervising health education practice teachers. Nancy passed away in September 2013.

Coming from a farm family, Nancy was the first in her family to attend college. She received the legislative scholarship for high school valedictorians, Mishicot Alumni Scholarship, and the Rowland Scholarship for women in physical education. Eugene and Nancy established the Eugene & Nancy Winkler Scholarship in 2005 to support others who will continue a lifelong dedication to learning.
