Family and Friends of James Grine
The Dr. James Grine Scholarship was established in honor of Jim by his family and friends to provide support to deserving music students. During his retirement recital in 2003, in front of an audience filled with friends and family, the establishment of this endowed scholarship fund was presented to him as a surprise.
Dr. James Grine joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh department of music in 1966. During his 37 years at UW Oshkosh, he had a tremendous impact on the lives of students and colleagues, as well as numerous arts organizations within the greater Oshkosh area.
For many years he held the principal flute position in the Oshkosh Symphony and the Green Lake Festival Orchestra. In 1975, he was appointed soloist and principal flutist of the Victoria (Texas) Bach Festival and was associated with this professional festival for 20 years, performing numerous concerts with its orchestra. He was also appointed its principal guest conductor, appearing on PBS (Houston) and receiving critical acclaim for his work with orchestra and singers. His engagements include solo performances with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, solo and chamber music performances with the Green Lake Festival (with conductors Sir David Willcocks and Catherine Comet), and solo and chamber performances in live broadcasts over Wisconsin Public Radio.
Nationally known as a successful flute teacher, James’ students have won national, regional, and state competitions. They have performed with professional orchestras both in the United States and abroad and have frequently performed in the master classes of internationally recognized flutists.
