Family and Friends of Joann Kindt
Friends and former students of Joann established the Joann Kindt Art Scholarship in 2005 in honor of her commitment to her students and teaching.
Joann Kindt (1925-2014), born in Kenosha, WI, came from a family of artists and musicians. She excelled in both fields, but eventually chose to pursue a career in art. She earned her BFA and master’s degrees at the Art Institute of Chicago. After teaching for several years, she returned to school to earn her Ph.D. at Ohio State University. In 1966, Joann joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She taught for nearly 25 years before retiring in 1990. In addition to teaching painting, figure drawing, and art history, she led three study tours to France. Her vast knowledge, constant willingness to help students, and her no compromise, do the best you can attitude, earned her admiration and respect among both students and faculty.
When the Grand Opera House in Oshkosh was restored, she reproduced the painting on the fire curtain that her grandfather, Louis Kindt, had originally done just over one hundred years earlier. Expressionist in style and a strong colorist, she worked in water colors, oils, and tempera. Her drawings were done in pencil and charcoal and pen and ink. She created etchings and woodcuts as well.
