Family and Friends of Major General Herbert Smith
The Major General Herbert A. Smith Scholarship was established by his family and friends in his memory. Herbert A. Smith (1902-1989) was the last commander of Wisconsin 32d Division. He retired after 43 years of service in the Wisconsin National Guard. Of that time, 38 months were served overseas. During World War II, he commanded the 2nd Battalion, 128th Infantry, 32d Division. He enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard as a Private in 1919. Maj. Gen. Smith was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service. He also worked as superintendent of mail at the Oshkosh Post Office and retired from there in 1961.
