Gladys Ihde

Gladys Wilma Ihde (pronounced “eed”) attended Oshkosh schools from kindergarten until her graduation from Oshkosh Teacher’s College in 1930 with a Bachelor of Education degree. In 1958, she received a Master of Science degree in Diagnosis and Remediation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

For over 43 years, Gladys worked with developmentally disabled, emotionally disturbed and handicapped children. For 32 of those years, she was a teacher of exceptional children in the Oshkosh Area Public Schools. In 1960, she became the first certified school psychologist in the district. Gladys also taught methods courses and demonstration classes for children with disabilities at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

The 1968 edition of “Who’s Who of American Women” listed thirty educational, professional, and social organizations to which Gladys belonged. Although she received many awards and honors throughout her career, the most important of those honors, were the affection and gratitude from those individuals whose lives she made happier and more productive.

The Gladys W. Ihde Education Scholarship was established in 2003 through an estate gift from Gladys.
