Orville Sherman
Orville C. Sherman attended Oshkosh High School. By his senior year, his knowledge of current events won him a national high school journalism contest. It is believed that he played the cornet in his high school band. Orville shared his talents with the 10th Street Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and participated in plays.
Upon entering Oshkosh State Teachers College, Orville took on leadership positions in band. He served as president and treasurer. He helped initiate the Orpheus Club, a music department fundraising organization. Orville also served as the editor-in-chief of The Advance, the college newspaper. In addition to his extracurricular activities, he studied pre-journalism and pre-engineering. Orville left UW Oshkosh in 1939 and moved to California, where he worked at the Pacific Fire Rating Bureau in Los Angeles. He passed away in 2003, at age 87.
Orville established two scholarships: the Orville C. Sherman Scholarship, which is given to undergraduates majoring in journalism or music and the Orville C. Sherman Scholarship (H.S. Senior) for incoming freshman pursuing music.
