William Hughes

William Hughes graduated from Oshkosh State Teachers College in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in history and social science education. He was a history professor and a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He passed away at the age of 86 in 2009. William established the Sara M. Hughes Memorial Scholarship in 1996 in memory of his late wife.

Sara Margaret (Cartwright) Hughes (1908-1995) graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Oshkosh State Teachers College in 1948. She earned a master’s degree at UW Madison. In her early career, she taught in one-room rural schools in Wisconsin and at Washington Elementary School in Oshkosh. After teaching, she went on to become an elementary school principal and was an acting instructor of education at UW Madison. In 1958, she was named the outstanding elementary teacher of the year for the state of Wisconsin by the Wisconsin State Chamber of Commerce and the UW Madison School of Education. She served in the Women’s Army Corps in World War II, where she met her husband, William, while on duty in England.
