Family and Friends of Lois Miranda

The Miranda Advocacy Award was established to honor a student who has shown exemplary work in advocacy as modeled by Lois Miranda, associate professor of social work at UW Oshkosh from 1973 to 1994.

Professor Miranda was co-founder and co-director of the Norma Shanebrook Multicultural Library in the campus Multicultural Education Center (MEC). She remained a leader of the library committee after she retired and helped head an effort by community residents and faculty, staff, and students to preserve the historic Thomas Wall House where the MEC is housed. Lois was honored for her lifelong commitment to cultural diversity when she was awarded the 2001 Celebration of Diversity Award at the sixth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community and University Celebration.

Prior to joining the UW Oshkosh faculty, Lois worked for social service agencies in Chicago, Houston, Cleveland, and Providence, RI. Her extensive local community service experience includes volunteering for the Oshkosh Family Training Program, the Mercy Medical Center Hospice Program, and the Child Protective Service Unit of the county social services department. Lois passed away in 2007.
