Family and Friends of Shirley Karlson
The Shirley M. Karlson Research Support Award was established in 1985 in memory of Dr. Karlson, who served as associate dean and director of the College of Nursing Graduate Program from 1981 to 1983. Prior to UWO, she was an associate professor in the graduate program in primary healthcare at IU-Indianapolis and an assistant dean of the baccalaureate program at the Indiana University School of Nursing. She earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees from Indiana University. She was a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow at the Colorado School of Nursing in Denver and focused her research in primary health care nursing, especially as it related to care of the elderly. Dr. Karlson passed away in 1983 at the age of 58.
