Family and Friends of Stephanie Honer and Martin Egan
The Stephanie M. Honer and Martin H. Egan Memorial Scholarship was established in 1997. Through the actions of family, friends, fellow students, and community members, this scholarship was created to honor their memory and encourage future students to selflessly reach out to others as Marty and Stephanie had.
Stephanie Honer of Plain, Wisconsin, was an active high school student. She managed volleyball for several years, participated in forensics and drama, taught a preschool Sunday school class, and worked at a grocery store. During her senior year of high school, Stephanie was involved in a counseling program for students. She continued her outreach activities at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where she pursued a double major in secondary education and Spanish. Stephanie worked as a community advisor in Fletcher Hall and was involved in the orientation program for new students. She worked with children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and planned to become a guidance counselor for high school or college students.
Martin Egan of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, graduated from St. Mary’s Springs High School, where he was a member of the tennis team. He was very active in Big Brothers Big Sisters and was first matched with his “little brother” during his senior year of high school. Marty was a volunteer at the Christine Ann Center, a domestic abuse shelter, where he worked with children’s groups. He served as a community advisor for a year at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, and received the UW Oshkosh Foundation’s Sister Irene Kohne Scholarship twice, in recognition of his community service activities. Since the eighth grade, Marty professed his desire to become a teacher and had volunteered his time in this area, working with learning disabled and struggling students and helping with special projects.
Stephanie and Marty were engaged to be married in July 1998, but they lost their lives in a tragic house fire on New Year’s Day 1997.
